From Concept to Creation, The Journey of Furniture Design

Furniture design is a discipline where creativity meets functionality, transforming ideas into objects that improve everyday experiences. Within the Furniture Design course, third-year students in the Interior Design Engineering Department at Tishk International University explore the relationship between aesthetics, ergonomics, sustainability, and user needs.

Through this course, students learn how to develop a design from an initial idea into a complete furniture piece, passing through different stages including research, concept development, sketches, technical drawings, physical models, and final prototypes.

The First Step: Furniture Design Exhibition 2025

The 2025 Furniture Design Exhibition marked the beginning of an annual tradition within the department. It provided students with a professional platform to present their creative achievements and demonstrate their understanding of furniture design principles.

The exhibition showcased a variety of student projects, highlighting creativity, craftsmanship, and the ability to transform abstract ideas into functional designs. Each piece represented a unique design approach, reflecting students’ exploration of materials, forms, and user experiences.

Expanding Creativity: Furniture Design Exhibition 2026.

Following the success of the first exhibition, the 2026 Furniture Design Exhibition presented a wider collection of innovative furniture designs. Students explored contemporary ideas, sustainable materials, and human-centered solutions to create furniture that combines visual identity with practical function.

The exhibition highlighted not only the final products but also the design process behind them, including research, experimentation, problem-solving, and continuous refinement.

Learning Through Making: Educational Experience

More than a display of finished products, these exhibitions represent the educational philosophy of the Furniture Design course: learning through creativity, experimentation, and making.

By presenting their work to the university community and guests, students gained valuable experience in professional presentation, design communication, and explaining their concepts to an audience.

Guidance and Collaboration: Supporting Student Creativity

The Furniture Design Exhibitions were supervised by Mrs. Faeza Bakir and Ms. Sara Mahmood, who guided students throughout the design journey, encouraging them to develop innovative ideas and strengthen their technical and creative skills.

The collaboration between instructors and students reflects the department’s commitment to creating an environment where students can explore, experiment, and grow as future designers.

Building the Future of Design: A Continuing Tradition

The Furniture Design Exhibitions of 2025 and 2026 represent the creativity, dedication, and development of third-year Interior Design Engineering students. They demonstrate how design education can transform ideas into meaningful objects that connect creativity with function.

As this annual tradition continues, the exhibition will remain a celebration of innovation, craftsmanship, and the next generation of interior designers.
